For church planters and pastors of small churches, finding “affordable” health insurance can be a huge obstacle. Our denomination does not offer this benefit so we are left to try and figure out the dilemma for ourselves. We met with an independent insurance broker a few weeks ago and thought we had found an “affordable” plan. However, when I went to fill out the online application, it wouldn’t work. When I contacted the insurance company, I was told that the system was down because they were in the process of changing the rates and it would be a serious increase. We’re waiting to hear how much that means.
We would appreciate your prayers – that we will trust God and He will provide for our needs.
Jeff,
I’m in the same boat as you, trying to figure this insurance thing out all by myself. I’ve had the advantage of being on my wife’s insurance the first few months we’ve been at the church while she finished out her contact at her school. Now is time to get the insurance. I think what we are going to go with is Blue Cross/Blue Shield. They have two options, and I’m guessing the HSA option might work for you guys IF you are all relatively healthy. Their standard insurance (traditional policy) is quite spendy, but so is everyone else’s. Definitely a frustrating component of rural ministry.
